1. Set up a Google My Business account
This is dead easy. Just log in and setup your business details and address. It will rank in it’s own section on Google searches and is a sure-fire way to get noticed quicker. You can now add some photographs to make your listing more interesting too!
2. If you can, run your site securely
Purchase a secure certificate HTTPS and get it installed on your server. Secure websites are starting to rank higher in search results. People like to feel safe surfing these days and Google is well aware of this.
3. Find your own exclusive keywords
It’s not easy, but try to find different keywords than everyone else is using. After all, If everyone is using the same terms and keywords – how does a search engine differentiate between any of them? Using relevant, but unique, keywords will make you stand out from the crowd.
4. Spend time labelling your images
A photo of an amazing product or service on your website isn’t going to get the web spiders spinning with a name like IMG167923455559666.jpg – it needs to be descriptive and accurate. Name the image filenames as accurately as possible and describe why it’s on your site in the alt tags!
5. Know and understand your online audience
You need to know exactly who you’re trying to get the attention of and why! Find out who your typical website viewer is and go everywhere they go! No, don’t stalk them, but if your audience spends a lot of time on Facebook, concentrate there!
6. Lots of eggs – many baskets
Don’t just concentrate on Google. Although Google is the number one destination for people searching the internet, things change and concentrating on one thing and one thing only, could lead to problems down the line. Build your mailing list up and concentrate on social media as well as Google for an all round sustained online audience.
7. Write lots of blogs
Try to write at least one blog a week. Keep it interesting, think about it – are you going to share a blog post that just tells you how great someone thinks they are? No… but you will share a blog post that makes an interesting read with useful information! Keep this in mind, the more your blogs are shared, the more your website is out there!
8. Keep it personal
People like to be friendly. Don’t create loads of massive corporation style posts/blogs just to try and impress! Unless you’re a massive multinational company, be honest… talk about your friends… reply to posts personally. Build it up one step at a time.
9. Be original
Google doesn’t like duplicate content! NEVER – copy something word for word from another site… you could be penalised for it! If you’re going to write content, spend the time to make it your own. Yes… we all do research – we can’t know everything about anything, but we must show our audience that we know what we’re talking about and not be creating duplicate content that’s available elsewhere.
10. Don’t expert huge changes overnight
Unless you’ve got a huge PPC budget, keep it real. Just because you’ve done a bit of optimisation on your site, don’t expect to be the number one ranking Kitchen Company in Europe overnight. These things take time – and you will need to work really hard at getting your site to the top of the ranking charts! Think of it almost like a song… just because you’ve wrote a couple of words in the right order, doesn’t mean it’s going to be a number one hit. You have to hone your craft and keep at it.
